The Origin of Chinese Dragon


Chinese dragon pictureThe pronunciation of dragon in Chinese is similar to the English word - "Long". The dragon is an important symbol of one of the most magic parts of Chinese ancient cultural mysteries.

In an archaeological site from the ancient Chinese Yin Shang Dynasty, (about 3000 years ago) archaeologists had already found the relics of the pictographic character of the dragon symbol.

traditional Chinese dragon symbolThe dragon was a mysterious animal as there is no one, who has ever seen such a creature on the planet before. As matter of fact, the Chinese dragon was only the symbolic animal created by ancient Chinese people based upon their imagination.

It is a kind of creature, which combines all the advantages and strengths other animals have and symbolizes the strength and power of a happy animal.

The dragon was described as a kind of legendary animal or a sort of fairy creature, who came up with a big mouth, big paws and which can swim and fly.

The Chinese Han Dynasty scholar Xu Shen (About 2000 years ago) created such a picture for dragon: the dragon's body was like a snake but far bigger and longer, the length of its body scale could be tremendously long, but it could be automatically adjust itself to be short.

It's color can vary in different situations, and can be shining and can be dark. The dragon can freely fly to heaven or dive into the deep seas anytime it wishes.

Chinese dragon headIt got fish's tail so it can swim and dive into deep waters. It has got a deer's antlers and dog's grasping ability, so its sense of hearing and smell is excellent. It has got Fish's scale and tail, so it can swim and dive into the deep waters. Its face shares the feature of a lion's with a big mouth, looking ferocious.

It has got four feet just like any other beast so it can walk on land. It has a long neck with long hair on it like a horse, so it can run fast.

The dragon has got the talons of a hawk, so it can fly and attack any beast on the land from the air.

Chinese Dragon Symbols & Tattoos


Today Chinese symbol for dragon actually has two versions : the traditional version & the simplified version. Both versions mean exactly the same but just appear totally different. In mainland China, Chinese symbol for dragon is written as "龙" (simplified version) and in Hong Kong or Taiwan areas, the dragon symbol is still written in the traditional way as "龍"

On the left, is the traditional Chinese symbol for "dragon" and on the right is the simplified version of "dragon symbol".

The difference between the two versions isn't huge, as you can see. But choosing which one to be your dragon tattoos is really up to your personal preference.

That's the reason why for so many years, the dragon tattoos always seemed to be Chinese tattoo lovers' favorites.
