The Secrets of Chinese Letters & Alphabet
Many People think that Chinese is probably one of the most difficult languages on this planet. It is partially right, because the Chinese language is totally different from the Roman alphabetic letter system. In tradition, there is no existence of Chinese letters or alphabets, whatsoever, so, on the surface, each Chinese word looks totally different from one another and there seems to be no link between them.
But still there are certain rules to follow in the formation of different Chinese symbols. And if we break a single Chinese word down, we will find that almost each Chinese symbol consists of different elements from strokes to an independent small character. These basic elements actually were linked with each other in order. The traditional Chinese word has no spelling at all and therefore there was no real Chinese alphabet existing in ancient times. In mainland China, there is a kind of Chinese phonetic alphabet called "Pinyin". In fact, it is a sort of phonetic transcription for Chinese symbol characters and can be considered as Chinese alphabetical system. Actually, the Chinese alphabetical system consists of exactly the same 26 English letters, but within Chinese PinYin system, these letters turned out to be Chinese letters. The "Pinyin" system first came out in 1958 and consists of Roman Alphabets. Following a special formula different Roman letters can combine sounds into syllables. You can use "Pinyin" by way of different spellings to transcribe different Chinese symbol characters. The Pinyin system has been adopted by the United Nations and become the standard worldwide format to transcribe Chinese symbol characters into the Roman alphabet. But in Taiwan, people still use a non-Roman alphabet system promulgated in 1913. It's called "the notional
phonetic alphabet? The Notional phonetic system is specially designed and can be written to Chinese characters as a
supplement. Are you surprised when you see Chinese typing their words via the
computer? How can they type symbols, and make them appear on the screen? Chinese people use Pinyin to fulfill such a task.
Don't forget Pinyin consists of exactly the same Roman alphabets as English words. Pinyin spelling can transcribe any
Chinese symbols and finally put them on the screen.
But in Taiwan this is different. Each computer keyboard in Taiwan
will have a specific phonetic notion sharing the same space with a Roman alphabet. Following the specialized notional
alphabetic system, Taiwanese still can use computer keyboards to type Chinese words.
