What sort of Chinese tattoos are these celebrities' favorites?
Marcus Camby
NBA New York Knicks Player Marcus Camby has large Chinese symbols of 勉族 on his arms.
But 勉族 is not a real Chinese phrase, each symbol has different meanings and it's very rare to see Chinese people combining these two symbols together to mean something.
勉 means "strive and work hard" and 族 means "clan, class or group". So probably Camby used this tattoo to encourage himself to play hard and work diligently for his team.
But unfortunately the words he has chosen do not look clear and coherent in native Chinese eyes, since Chinese people rarely use such a phrase to mean something.
Victoria Beckham
The Ex spice girl Victoria Beckham has "女力" on her left abdomen and her tattoo 女力 also shared a similar problem.
The symbols 女and 力 were very rarely combined together to mean something in Chinese. But independently, the symbol 女 means woman or female and 力means strength and power.
So here it is still easy to understand what Mrs Beckham's symbol tattoo means in Chinese, However, such a combination of these two words is just very awkward in many native Chinese people' eyes.
Natalie Imbruglia
Australian pop singer Natalie Imbruglia was known for her 1997 hit Torn. Natalie has two beautiful symbol tattoos on her left ankle.
But they are Japanese Kanji symbols not exactly Chinese symbols. See picture from below
The kanji symbol means "courage"; "bravery".
Christian Vieri
Italy footballer Christian Vieri also has chosen a lot of Chinese symbol tattoos to decorate his body.
It seems to have been a great mix of Chinese symbols on his arm. As the picture shows, these symbols are actually not related with reach other, there is not a slogan or a sentence being tattooed on his arm .
His favorite tattoo symbols include 雷, which means "thunder"; 和, which means "peace" and 心, which means "heart", etc. It's a nice collection!
