Chinese Tattoo Story- Yue Mu Ci Zi
About 800 years ago, tattoo designs in China gradually started to be accepted by the official government as
well as the general public.
The turning point of tattooing in Chinese history starts from a classic Chinese
historic story called "Yue Mu Ci Zi", which in English can be translated as Yue Fei's mother puncturing tattoo for him.
Yue Fei was a Chinese national hero about 8-9 hundred years ago, when he was young, he was brave and
excellent at martial arts. At that time, China was invaded by its neighboring country called Jin from the north.
Half of Chinese territory was lost to its enemy and the Chinese army's moral was low.
Yue Fei decided to join the army and dedicate himself to his nation, which was in a crisis. His decision received his
mother's warm support.
Before he departed to the front, his mother punctured these four Chinese symbol tattoos on
his back. "精忠報國", which means "being loyal, faithful and dedicated to the nation".
The four symbol tattoos were placed on Yefei's back permanently and later on became Yue Fei's personal motto and
encouraged him to fight against the invaders bravely.

This story highlighted a positive side of tattoos to most Chinese people, and tattoo came to
be viewed as a kind of sign of showing the loyalty or dedication to some cause or faith.
