The traditional Chinese technique of Tattooing
The history of tattoo designs in China can be viewed as a developing process full of frustrations.
Only after centuries of development, today tattoos have become more and more acceptable to young people
and Chinese society.
The Chinese traditional method of tattooing the body is simple.
First, people would tie up tightly two needles and dip them into the Chinese black link.
Tiny capillary vessels lie between the needles and the ink is soaked into the needles.
When the needle started to puncture the skin, the ink pigment started to infuse into the skin.
Before being injected into people’s skin, the original color of the ink was black, but after being injected into a
human skin, due to different factors, which influence the skin's color including the effect of melanin.
The black color would be gradually changed into bluish green. So tattoo in Chinese was originally called "Ci Chin"
(刺青),which means "puncturing in bluish green".
The Modern Technique of Chinese Tattooing
Today, the technique for tattoo designs in China has been improved dramatically, and people's
acknowledgment of tattoos has also changed. The tattoo is no longer a sign or id for a specific association or
Chinese mafia organization. Instead it has become a specific totem symbol for an individual to express his or her
personality, faith or other purposes.
